Steveston Harbour is set to get a $7.3 million facelift with wharf repairs and dredging being funded by the federal government.
As part of $51.7 million being spread across small craft harbours in Canada, $7.3 million will go to repair and maintain fishing harbours in British Columbia.
Most notably, wharf repairs will take place at the Gulf of Georgia and Paramount canneries and dredging will be carried out off Paramount and at other Fraser River sites.
Minor repair and maintenance projects, as well as some technical studies, will also be carried out at fishing harbours throughout the province.
Kerry-Lynne Findlay, MP for Delta-Richmond East, made the funding announcement Monday on behalf of the Fisheries and Oceans ministry.
The Harper Government understands that safe, efficient harbours are essential for a healthy fishing industry, said Findlay.
This years investment of $51.7 million will fund major repair, maintenance and construction projects, as well as dredging, at approximately 95 fishing harbours in Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Manitoba and British Columbia.
