School board election dominated by Richmond First

Like its city council cousin, Richmond First still has the upper hand on the school board, after the slates three incumbents filled the top three slots and were then joined in fourth by newcomer Eric Yung.

It has restored its majority of 4:3 on the board, while the RITE slate welcomed two newcomers alongside incumbent Rod Belleza Kenny Chiu and Norm Goldstein.

Yung, who narrowly missed out in 2008 (when he placed 8th), said he was looking forward to encouraging the school board to better engage with the various parent groups.

Parents are the most listened to group, but are the least engaged, Yung said, soon after being elected.

Chiu, meanwhile, said he was delighted to be elected, especially considering it was his first time of asking. This underscores the citys appetite for change, he said.

Goldstein thanked the RITE slate for inviting him aboard, adding that the group was very supportive of him when he headed up the Incentive Program for students at MacNeill secondary, something he noted that Richmond First has watered down over the years.
