Theyre on their way back and they promise to be as scary as ever.

Scarecrows of all shapes, sizes and guises will take over an entire village again this weekend for the second annual Steveston Scarecrow Crawl.

Organized by the Steveston Merchants Association (SMA), the event captured the imagination of locals and tourists alike in its inaugural year.

Scarecrows spread like wild fire through the village last year, with more than sixty merchants creating scarecrows, which lurked around the business district.

The scarecrows stand outside businesses during business hours, or are on display in store windows. Kicking off on Saturday, Oct. 1, the crawl lasts for the entire month.

The event was created to attract attention to the village in a bid to steer business to Steveston year round.

Cleverly themed scarecrows often reflect the personality of participating businesses, including everything from traditional to whimsical and even nautical scarecrows.

Visitors who go on a crawl can take the opportunity to stop and pose with scarecrows.

To mark the occasion, Richmond News photographer Chung Chow will be out on the prowl in the village, snapping shots of the creations.

The News will post his shots on our photo gallery section at www.richmond-news.com.

Well then ask you, the readers, to email us who your favourite scarecrow is and feel free to send us your shots as well and well post them on the gallery also.

Two weeks into the event, Friday, Oct. 14, a randomly chosen reader from all who emailed us will receive a prize.

*The SMA will also be hosting a special event on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Fishermans Park (in front of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery) which will include pumpkin rolling, sack races, and a childrens pie eating contest.
