Gilley Road reopens
Gilley Road between Westminster Highway and Smith Drive, in the Hamilton neighbourhood in Richmond, has reopened to traffic following various construction since 2019.

A main access road in Hamilton has re-opened to traffic after being closed for various construction work since 2019.

The road re-opened on Nov. 18 between Westminster Highway and Smith Drive. It is one of the inner Hamilton community's main access roads to Westminster Highway.

The road was originally slated to open late last year, but that was then pushed back.

Various work has taken place along Gilley Road since summer 2019, according to the City of Richmond.

Some of that work includes condo developments, as well as work completed by the city.

The city said completed drainage upgrade works at the intersection of Gilley Road and Westminster Highway, which paved the way for the developer’s work to widen the intersection.

Intersection sidewalks, turning lanes and new street lights were also improved at the intersection.

The developer of Hamilton Neighbourhood Village was also required to “significantly” raise the grade of Gilley Road to match the ground floor commercial units of the new development.

Hence, the road was closed while it was being raised and the utility works were being completed.

According to the city, “various work related to the ongoing development of the Hamilton Neighbourhood Village,” meant further road closures were necessary.

The city said the ultimate road will include parking, landscaping and sidewalks on both sides of the street.
