Medium and large-scale farmers will be rolling into Richmond on Saturday evening for a “mobile farmers market,” selling their produce directly to consumers.
Gagan Singh, an Abbotsford blueberry farmer and local farming advocate, has organized the travelling farmers market, and this Saturday they’ll hit three communities: Abbotsford in the morning, Surrey in the afternoon and Richmond in the evening, at 2691 Simpson Rd. near Bridgeport.
Singh said there will be a “good selection” of produce sold by medium and large-scale farmers. This includes free-range eggs, cucumbers, zucchinis, eggplant, corn, chili peppers, tomatoes, raw honey, exotic mushrooms, garlic, potatoes and radishes.
On Wednesday, Singh was still finalizing the list of farmers and the produce they will be selling.
The mobile farmers market is a response to rising food costs, Singh said, adding one in four Canadian households are facing food insecurity.
“Families are struggling, farmers are struggling and, meanwhile, our food is caught in the middle of tariff battles and corporate markups,” he said.
Singh wants Canadians to be able to buy local, but he said there are many barriers to producing and selling food locally, including the cost of land, labour and government permitting.
Singh is also raising the alarm about the number of farmers giving up on agricultural production, saying about six farmers across Canada are leaving every week.
He knows personally of two farmers in the Fraser Valley who told him this week they’re leaving farming.
And “Mother Nature” is also making it harder, he added, with flooding and drought affecting their farms. Singh noted some farmers lost half of their raspberry and blueberry crops this year due to the heat.
At the mobile farmers market, farmers can sell their food directly to customers, keeping costs lower than at grocery stores, Singh said.
Normally, large-scale farmers can’t deal with individual customers, he added, so they go through several middlemen, which ultimately raises prices before their produce hits the grocery stores.
