B.C. schools will be taking part in the Student Vote Program ahead of the municipal elections.

Twenty-nine schools in Richmond are taking part in the B.C. Student Vote program during the municipal elections.

This includes both public and private elementary and high schools.

The program allows teachers to bring democracy to the classroom and empowers students to practice the election process and to be active and engaging citizens in their communities.

Student Vote is a program under Civix, a non-partisan Canadian charity to strengthen democracy through civic education, that provides educational materials to schools to teach about government and the election process.

This year, a total of 736 schools have registered to participate in the Student Vote program for the 2022 local elections, representing 126 B.C. cities and regional districts.

More than 60,000 students are expected to participate in the third Student Vote program event in the province.

Student vote election results will be published at the close of polls on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m.
