The Richmond School District announced Sunday all schools will be open on Monday despite the wildfire smoke currently blanketing the Lower Mainland.
In a tweet, the BC Teachers Federation called on the provincial health officer to “take action now,” raising concerns about crowded classrooms and poor ventilation.
The BCTF tweeted that the combination of COVID-19 and wildfire smoke is “deeply concerning” and that teachers and students shouldn’t be in “crowded classrooms with no ventilation or fresh air.”
The combination of COVID19 pandemic and extremely poor wildfire air quality is deeply concerning for #bced. Teachers and students should not be in crowded classes with no ventilation or fresh air. #BCpoli, the employers, @CDCofBC and PHO need to provide advice and take action now

But the school district stated in a letter on its website on Sunday they have been monitoring the smoke projections and health advisories and will follow the guidance of Vancouver Coastal Health.
Windows and doors will be kept closed and, if the air quality continues as it currently is, “vigorous" outdoor activities, such as P.E., won’t take place. Furthermore, according to the statement, students who are sensitive to smoke can stay indoors during breaks.
