Richmond public schools will be closed on Monday because of the extreme heat wave hitting the region.

A letter went out to parents on Sunday evening cancelling classes on Monday, June 28.

Because most schools don’t have air conditioning, it is expected to be almost as hot inside as outside.

Temperatures in Richmond are expected to hit 34 degrees Celsius on Monday, according to Environment Canada.

The school district will reassess to see whether classes will resume on Tuesday, June 29.

While high schools are largely done for the year, elementary schools have two more days of in-class instruction.

“The heat that we are experiencing is unprecedented and with this in mind, the district must put plans in place to ensure that the health and safety of our students remains our top priority,” read the letter from district superintendent Scott Robinson.

School staff will be onsite if students do arrive, but they will attempt to connect with families so they can go home.

Vancouver Coastal Health has put out an extreme heat alert because of the high temperatures across the region.

Schools are also closed in Vancouver, Burnaby, North Vancouver and other Lower Mainland communities.
