Richmond residents are reminded to not keep their pets in the cars as temperatures have been seen rising in the past few days.
While temperatures outside can show 24 C, the inside of a car can go up to 48 C after 10 minutes, according to the City of Richmond.
Pets are recommended to be taken out of the car or they are to be left at home during a warm day.
Community members who see an animal in a hot car should not break any windows. Only the RCMP and Richmond Fire-Rescue have the authority to enter vehicles to rescue animals in distress..
For those who see an animal in a car:
- Ask owners of nearby businesses to tell owners to return to their vehicles with information of the vehicle's license plate, colour, make and model
If pets are showing symptoms of distress:
- Call community bylaws at 604-276-4345 from Monday to Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- After hours, call Richmond RCMP non-emergency line at 604-278-1212
