Richmond RCMP cracks down on impaired driving for the holidays

Police issued four roadside suspensions and two 90-day driving prohibitions so far in December.

Richmond RCMP is asking drivers to be careful this holiday season by conducting a series of "counterattack operations" throughout the month.

As a part of the RCMP's "Light up the Province" campaign, police kicked off the first operation on Dec. 2, 2023.

Police officers saw 752 vehicles pass through the roadblock during the operation and issued four roadside suspensions and two 90-day driving prohibitions, according to Cpl. Adriana O'Malley, Richmond RCMP spokesperson.

She added impaired driving is a "serious concern" in B.C. at this time of the year and is "one of the top three contributing factors for fatal crashes" in the province.

According to ICBC data, 21 people in the Lower Mainland died in 2022 from fatal crashes where alcohol, drugs or medication was a contributing factor, which saw an increase from the 18 deaths in 2021.

In 2022, impaired driving ranked third as a contributing factor for fatal crashes at 19 per cent, following distracted driving at 26 per cent and speed at 28 per cent.

Community members are encouraged to plan ahead while attending holiday parties and events and consider safe means to get home, such as having a designated driver or taking taxis, ride-shares or public transit.

"Plan ahead to help make sure you make it home safe and sound this holiday season," said O'Malley.
