A Richmond man is facing an assault charge after allegedly striking an RCMP officer in the face and head while being arrested earlier this week.

Mohamed Walid Seqqat-Dekhama, 32 – who is known to police – has been charged with one count of assaulting a police officer.

Shortly after 7 p.m. on June 23, two officers went to a home in the 6000 block of Lynas Lane – near Westminster Highway and No. 2 Road – to arrest Seqqat-Dekhama, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant, according to Richmond RCMP.

The arrest warrant for the suspect was issued June 12, said the RCMP in a release, for the contravention of bail conditions stemming from a 2018 investigation into allegations of assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm.

Mounties say that while officers were speaking to Seqqat-Dekhama and attempted to arrest him, the suspect fled and allegedly struck one of the officers, once in their face and once to their head.

The officer was transported to hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is currently recovering.

Seqqat-Dekhama remains in custody.
