Richmond Ravens win gold in Nanaimo

The Richmond Ravens Female Hockey Association’s U13 C1 team took first place at the Nanaimo Female Winter Classic last weekend.

The Richmond Ravens Female Hockey Association’s U13 C1 team took first place at the Nanaimo Female Winter Classic last weekend.

The team went undefeated in the tournament, which started with a 2-2 tie with Tri-Port MHA (3) U13 Female C1 Wild. 

Leona Hope scored in the 1st period and Claire Gillanders scored in the 3rd period for the Ravens.

Next up, the girls won 3-1 against the Nanaimo MHA (1) U13 Female C1 Clippers, with goals from Sumeet Kaur Samra, Claire Gillanders and Roya Chen. 

Later in the day, the team won 4-0 against Meadow Ridge Female MHA U13 C2, with counters from Lily Maharaj, Madeline Turner, Claire Gillanders and Haylie Vina Tran.

On the Monday, the team went on to play in the finals against the Nanaimo Clippers, winning out comfortably 4-1.

Claire Gillanders scored two goals and Lily Maharaj and Haylie Vina Tran each scored one.

The team was led by the strong goaltending of Claire Chesters and skilled defense players Kaya Basanti, Roya Chen, Hailey Thomson, Sarah MacDonald, Leona Hope and Alora Hope. 

They were aided by strong forwards Madeline Turner, Giselle Burke, Haylie Vina Tran, Sumeet Kaur Samra, Misha Low, Anekha Gill and centers Claire Gillanders and Lily Maharaj.

The Ravens were led by head coach Bob Basanti, assistant coaches Jeff Thomson, Michael Burke and Dustin Turner and manager Wendy Pollock.
