Major pharmacies across Canada, including the London Drugs in Richmond, are launching a pain-free flu shot initiative to replace the discontinued nasal spray flu vaccine.

Pharmacies are partnering with Alera Skin Care, a Canadian pharmaceutical company, to launch a free application of Zensa Numbing Cream, which patients can request at certain pharmacies with their flu shots in mid-October.

Their goal is to give Canadians, especially kids, who are afraid of needles an option to overcome their fear and get their shots for the flu season with a cream that can numb the skin “in as little as ten minutes” for a pain-free experience.

Health Canada approved the topical anesthetic safe for children ages two and up to use.

Nabeel Abrahani, a pharmacist at London Drugs, said the cream can be used on the healthiest and most intact part of the skin for patients with eczema or other skin conditions. He added that healthcare professionals are required to explain that there will be burning and stinging if patients want to use the cream on broken skin.

“As a Canadian company, our values are rooted in creating products that help support people to live their healthiest lives,” said Hussein Lalani, president of Alera Skin Care in a media release, adding that they hope the cream can bring comfort and reduce stress for people getting their flu shots or other needle injections for their overall health.

Chris Chiew, general manager of London Drugs pharmacy, said that they are “pleased to be able to offer (their) patients the option of using Zensa Numbing Cream when getting their vaccinations.”

“We want to make sure there are no hindrances to people getting protection from the flu virus and Zensa should help; especially when it comes to individuals who may be nervous about getting the shot.”
