Ahlay Chin said she hopes to empower more students in need with bursary funds.

A Richmond-based not-for-profit will hold a fundraising event on June 12 to support students passionate about pursuing their studies in the mental health or health science field.

“Many of us have recognized the importance of raising awareness in the face of the pandemic since our life has experienced unprecedented challenges,” said Ahlay Chin, founder of Community Mental Wellness Association of Canada (CMWAC), a charity aimed at promoting mental health awareness and reducing stigma associated with mental illness.

“We have also heard numerous stories of students who are yearning to pursue a degree in the mental health or related field while facing a lack of financial resources. It’s heartbreaking to hear stories like this, and we feel the need to step in to help.”

Chin said her organization has presented a $2,000 bursary in total to four students each year over the past four years.

Those funds go towards students’ post-secondary education, noted Chin, adding that supporting four students each year is far from enough. They are looking to empower more students this year by increasing their bursary funds.

Therefore, the thought of launching a fundraising event came to Chin’s mind.

Richmondites are welcome to join Chin on June 12 to enjoy some snacks and sing Karaoke songs. Pre-registration and the wearing of face masks are required due to COVID-19 guidelines.

Meanwhile, this year’s bursary fund is still looking for applicants. Students who are graduating from secondary school and intend to pursue post-secondary education are encouraged to write an essay to outline their passion for the mental health field and submit their academic achievements to CMWAC.
