Richmond high school student wins Pink Shirt Day design contest

Pink Shirt Day is celebrated on Feb. 22.

A Richmond student’s design has been chosen as the winner of this year’s Pink Shirt Day t-shirt contest.

The contest was held by the Richmond Youth Media Program (RYMP) where participants were invited to create and submit a new design reminding people to show kindness and push back on bullying acts.

MacNeill secondary’s Botao Chen, who has been with the RYMP since 2018, chose the quote “We Rise by lifting Others” for his design.

Chen told the Richmond News that the quote personally resonated with him as someone on the student council.

“You’re influencing a lot of people in school so having the added responsibility of not only being kinder but also being collaborative with members is important,” said Chen.

“(Pink Shirt Day) is very much a day to bring awareness that bullying still happens.”

He added that the contest was a way to practice his graphic designing skills as well and had fun creating.

Chen’s design will be printed on the city’s pink t-shirts and will be worn by the City of Richmond and Community Association staff on and around Feb. 22 for Pink Shirt Day.
