Nearly 90 per cent of Richmond’s high school students graduated between 2016-2017 – a rate higher than the province’s average.
On Thursday, the province’s Ministry of Education announced high school completion rates across all districts. Richmond’s 2016-2017 completion rate was one per cent higher than the previous school year and also rose above the province’s completion rate which was at 84 per cent.
“High school completion is a key that opens doors for people, no matter what path they choose,” said Education Minister Rob Fleming.
Rates were lower for students with special needs and Indigenous students in 2016-2017 than the previous school year, however.
Just under 60 per cent of Indigenous students completed high school, while 72 per cent of students with special needs finished in 2016-2017. In the 2015-2016 school year, both of these individual groups of students had a completion rate of 75 per cent.
“We’ve seen positive improvements for students with diverse needs and Indigenous learners,” Fleming said. “But there is more work to be done to ensure all students can recognize their full potential.”
The province’s completion rate is the per cent of students who graduated within six years since their enrollment in grade eight.
