Richmond firefighters have a new contract – just a month before it expires.
The City of Richmond announced they and the union have ratified a three-year contract that gives the firefighters an increase of about 12.5-per-cent for the past three years.
Richmond Fire-Rescue firefighters have been without a contract since 2021.
The city said this contract is “consistent with other Lower Mainland municipalities.”
The 253 Richmond firefighters, represented by the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 1286, will get pay raises of 3.5-per-cent for 2022, 4.5-per-cent for 2023 and 4.5-per-cent for 2024 retroactively.
Furthermore, the new contract includes more extended health coverage, better flexibility for hours of work and other benefits, according to the City of Richmond.
“It reflects the City’s commitment to community safety by providing a fair and equitable compensation structure that supports staff and maintains an experienced and effective team of Richmond Fire-Rescue personnel,” reads a post by the City of Richmond.
The retroactive payments are within the city’s approved budget, the post added.
