Richmond driver parks in non-parking spot for quick shopping trip

The white BMW was parked next to a van accessible parking spot despite there being other vacant spots.

In true Richmond fashion, a local driver chose to create her own parking spot on the last day of 2022.

Long-time Richmond resident Darren Ong was confused to see a white BMW pull into a non-parking spot in front of Shopper's Drug Mart on Williams Rd on Saturday afternoon.

A picture provided by Ong show the car parked snugly in an area marked with yellow lines, which were meant to ensure enough space for ramps in the van accessible parking spots. He added that six empty parking spots could be seen nearby.

Ong told The Richmond News that he confronted the driver inside the store, who told him she "won't be shopping that long." After he threatened to call a tow truck, the driver agreed to move the vehicle.

The News previously reported that Richmond malls are the main problem areas where accessible parking spots with extra space for ramps are often misused.

Richmond Centre for Disability spokesperson Vincent Miele had told the News that such van accessible spots are a "necessity" for many who use wheelchairs and need more room to deploy ramps and navigate around the car.
