Richmond church concert connects musical community

The spring concert at Steveston United Church usually brings together the communitys music players and lovers under one roof, and this year is no exception.

In fact, the concert this Saturday (June 1) at 7 p.m. is expected to be better than previous, as special performers like the Fraser River Fiddlers, have approached the church to participate.

Its been growing every year and the feedback has always been enthusiastic, said piano teacher and organist Tyler Fleming, who has organized the event for the past four or five years. And with the Fraser River Fiddlers, I think itll be our best show yet.

The fiddlers, formed by violinist and teacher Lorraine Grescoe, is a group of Richmond youth who travel the Lower Mainland performing old-time fiddle music.

The group some of who are Grescoes own students ranges in age from six to 16, and adhere to a high musical standard.

Other performances include the Steveston United Church choir run by Fleming and a professional trumpeter.

There will also be singers, flutists and pianists, all from the wider Steveston community.

Weve also got some French horns, who arent necessarily professionals, but theyre certainly enthusiastic amateurs, said Fleming.

So theres going to be quite a variety of performances.

Fleming, who has been playing music for more than 40 years, originally organized the concert in order to raise money for a new organ at the church.

We promised to continue it every year, he said. Now all proceeds go to the music program at Steveston United.

He likes the idea of getting as many community members and music enthusiasts involved as possible and therefore, he keeps choir requirements flexible.

Understanding peoples busy schedules, theyre able to participate whenever they have time.

If they cant show up for a few sessions, thats fine, he said. I always have a few Plan Bs.

Saturdays event will include a sing-a-long and will be held at the church, 3720 Broadway St. (at 2nd Avenue). Admission is by donation.
