Richmond chorus to be joined by Steveston-London students in concert

The concert will be held on Tuesday, April 18.

Having youth involvement in an adult choir not only brings liveliness, but a learning experience for students, says a Richmond chorus conductor.

Brigid Coult, chorus conductor with the Richmond Orchestra and Chorus Association (ROCA), is excited to have Steveston-London’s student choir perform with the ROCA choir at Tuesday, April 18’s concert.

“Steveston-London’s choir often takes part in our Richmond Sings tradition, and we thought that for this concert, it would be nice to have youth involvement,” said Coult.

“It’s a really good opportunity to get them to come and sing with us for this one.”

The concert, The Music’s Always There, will feature works by choral composers John Rutter and Bob Chilcott. Rutter is known for his Christmas carols and folk songs, while Chilcott was a member of the British vocal group the King’s Singers and one of the best-known choral composers in the world.

Coult told the Richmond News that the Steveston-London students will be joining them for several of Rutter and Chilcott’s arrangements, but will also be performing “a set of their own world pop music.”

“I think (the students) enjoy singing with adults. They get a great boost out of having strong voices around them and getting a chance to sing something new,” she said.

“We’d love to have more youth sitting with us for future feature events.”

The concert is set to take place at Fraserview Mennonite Brethren Church at 11295 Mellis Dr. at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for seniors and students, $23 for adults, $15 for groups of five or more and $25 at the door.
