The City of Richmond was voted most active community in B.C. last year, and now they have their sights on being the most active in Canada.

In last year’s ParticipACTION Community Challenge, Richmond amassed more than 9.7 million active minutes, winning the title of “British Columbia’s Most Active Community.”

This year, Richmond is hoping to be named “Canada’s Most Active Community.”

The annual ParticipACTION Community Challenge starts Thursday (June 1) and continues until June 30.

The city is offering more than 50 free or low-cost activities, such as Nordic poling, walking tours and inter-generational strength training, to get residents involved in the challenge.

The challenge will be launched with the Community Challenge Kick Off event on Friday, June 2 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Thompson Community Park, 5011 Granville Ave., located next to Thompson Community Centre.

This public, family-friendly event will feature a variety of free outdoor fitness, sport and recreational activities.

Other activities being offered throughout the month of June in Richmond include parent-and-tot soccer, youth open gyms at Cambie Community Centre and Mothlike, an artist-led participatory performance hosted by the Richmond Art Gallery at Garry Point Park.

ParticipACTION is offering a prize of $100,000 for the winner of the Canada’s Most Active Community competition.

Individuals, organizations and schools can track their physical activity via the ParticipACTION app or on their website.
