The Richmond School District has bought the former Pythagoras Academy site to create a new elementary school for $60 million, of which the province paid $6 million.

The former private school at 8671 Odlin Cres. is expected to open as a public school in September 2026.

In a press release, the school district said it’s using funds from the sale of Steveston Secondary towards the purchase.

Steveston Secondary sold for $41 million in 2013.

Student enrolment has increased in City Centre by 42 per cent over the past four years with several schools such as Brighouse elementary over capacity.

The new elementary school is expected to open in September 2026.

"The Board of Education is proud to invest in the future of Richmond by purchasing a new school site to help address enrollment growth in our city centre," said Ken Hamaguchi, chairperson of the Richmond Board of Education.

"The proceeds from the sale of the former Steveston Secondary School were always intended to support the long-term infrastructure needs of our community. Today’s announcement reflects the board’s commitment to thoughtful planning and to supporting students for years to come."

According to BC Assessment, the property is 6.25 acres, and the school was built in 2015. It was previously owned by Rec Holdings Co.

Pythagoras Academy is co-located with the Richmond Jewish Day School on No. 5 Road.
