A driver has been convicted of three charges in connection with illegal ride-hailing operations in Richmond.
Officers with Richmond RCMP's Road Safety Unit and the Ministry of Transportation and Transit's Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) stopped the driver on Dec. 20, 2023 during a joint operation to crack down on unlicensed ride-hailing.
The driver was charged under the Passenger Transportation Act for operating without a license, and under the Motor Vehicle Act for using the wrong class of driver's license and failing to display the required certificate.
He was convicted of similar offences in 2020.
"We have highlighted these joint operations throughout the year, and will continue to do so, to educate the public on the risks associated to using these illegal services," said Sgt. Eric Baskette with Richmond RCMP's Road Safety Unit.
"Illegal ride-hail operators do not ... meet critical safety requirements, including criminal record checks, licensing and insurance. These charges and convictions come with steep financial penalties, which we hope send the message loud and clear that operating illegally in Richmond is not going to be tolerated."
In 2024, Richmond RCMP and CVSE officers conducted a total of eight joint enforcement operations, which resulted in more than $79,000 in fines issued to 35 illegal ride-hail operators.
