Rear View Mirror: Richmond News got set for Olympic Daily

There were just a few days to go to the start of the 2010 Olympic Games and everyone, including the Richmond News, was getting excited
In the first week of February, 2010, the Richmond News was getting excited about launching an Olympic Daily Report

The first weekend of February, 2010, was all abuzz in Richmond with the Olympic Games just one week away.

Not least in the Richmond News office, where we were gearing up for launching our Olympic special Daily Report, which went on to win a provincial newspaper award the following year.

The News proudly announced that, it was going to publish daily, starting Feb. 13, 2010, as well as continuing to print our regular newspaper, which was every Wednesday and Friday at the time.

“The 2010 Olympics are likely the biggest event that will come to Richmond in our lifetime,” said the News publisher of that time, Lori Chalmers.

“Our Richmond News accredited media team will provide the inside scoop on what is happening at the oval and how Canada is doing overall in the Olympics.”

Long track speed skating at the Oval, special City of Richmond entertainment and celebrations at the O Zone, everything that was happening at Heineken House, aka Minoru Arenas, and every Olympic Games daily highlight was set to fill the pages of the Daily Report.

An amusing side note to the front page picture that week shows a Blackberry device as being one of the tools of the trade at the time.

In all, the News published a total of 16 issues of the Daily Report, with our relatively small team working around the clock to get both publications out to our readers.

Next week, we will cast our eyes back to the kick off of the Olympics in 2010 in Richmond.
