RCMP take to the water

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Steveston office donated a rigid hull inflatable boat to the Richmond RCMP, which will be docked in Steveston.

The donation allows the DFO and RCMP to begin marine patrols and vessel inspections around the waterways surrounding Richmond to reduce crime and maintain traffic safety.

"This is a good example of two agencies working together to help community members stay safe," said Corporal James Lunny of the Richmond RCMP. Lunny has been working closely with the DFO.

Officers want to educate the public on water safety and boating laws and regulations.

They will also watch for impaired vessel operation and other infractions of the Criminal Code, Richmond bylaws and Fisheries Act.

Richmond police have conducted over 25 patrols and stopped more than 160 vessels to ensure public safety and compliance with regulations.

Seven officers at the Richmond detachment attended a five day basic water transport course in Tofino for training to operate the vessel.

They also attended a four day advanced water training session to learn navigational skills and how to use the boat in all weather conditions.

The detachment hopes to train more officers in the future.

The boat requires at least two officers onboard to be deployed and is capable of carrying six crew members.

The vessel - powered by twin 150hp engines - is equipped with radar, sonar and GPS.

The Steveston Harbour Authority is in the process of constructing a boathouse for the vessel and plans to name it are in place.

It will be available for calls 12 months a year with active patrols taking place during various times until the end of September.
