The City of Richmond will ask the public what it thinks of plans to spend $328,000 to hire new staff to police and patrol soil removal and deposit on agricultural land.
Hiring a clerk to manage permit applications and two bylaw officers to conduct patrols and field investigations is one of the options being explored by the city.
The move is part of bylaw amendments, waiting for provincial approval, which will require a permit to be obtained and a fee to be paid for certain amounts of soil removal and infilling on agricultural land.
City council decided this week to send the entire process out for public consultation, expected to be later this spring.
The proposed changes were sparked by a controversial blockade on an infill site earlier this year by local farmers and their supporters.
