The City of Richmond is seeking public input on its transit/bus shelters and benches as its advertising contract expires in December.

The survey is found at LetsTalkRichmond.ca and asks various questions about transit shelters, such as the importance one places on weather protection, lighting, transit information as well as the importance of advertising revenue for the city.

The survey also asks for locations where a bus shelter would be most beneficial.

There is also an open comment box to voice issue sthat are not solicited in the survey.

In the city there are 716 active bus stops, 67 of them having a shelter. Only six shelters are city-owned bus stops, while Pattison Outdoor Advertising owns 48.

Privately constructed shelters are usually built in high-traffic areas to promote the attached advertising. The city’s shelters are intended as supplements.

Private bus shelters in Richmond have been known to contentiously feature Chinese advertisements.

According to the city’s FAQ page, “A competitive Request For Proposal will be issued that allows proponents to bid on a 20-year contract for the provision of transit shelters with advertising.”

More FAQs can be found on the site.
