The vast majority of students in Richmond attend public schools, but a growing number of families are opting for private or independent schools.
Choice School offers an enriched program specifically for gifted learners, but most of Richmond's independent schools are faith-based.
Richmond Jewish Day (RJD) school and Richmond Christian, as well as, Cornerstone Christian Academy emphasize and integrate religion in the curriculum. It's one of the reasons families choose these schools over those in the public system.
"Every family has their own story as to why they choose us," said Anna Quon, Cornerstone school manager. "We focus more on structure and can pay better attention to students as our classes are smaller. The religious aspect underlines all our teachings."
Religious schools aim to foster students' spiritual as well as academic growth.
"We see everybody as sort of a diamond in the rough," said Quon. "We look at character, and build close relationships with these students."
Parents find comfort in schools that align with their personal values and lifestyles, according to Roger Grose, the superintendent of Richmond Christian.
"We try to share what the students are really about and where they come from," added Abba Brodt, principal of Richmond Jewish Day school. "Judaism can be a funny thing with lots of facets from heritage, language and religion. We want to show how the students are all connected, and present this with joy and passion."
