Photos: Wildfire smoke causes Vancouver skyline to 'disappear' from Richmond

You’ve heard of missing persons reports, now you’re reading a report of a missing city – Vancouver, to be exact.

You’ve heard of missing persons reports, now you’re reading a report of a missing city – Vancouver, to be exact.

At least that was the impression one could deduce if you’ve been walking along the West Dike Trail in Richmond over the last few, very smoky days.

Three pictures taken at the exact same spot by Steveston resident Kristene Murray over a space of three days – from Wednesday to Saturday – shows the extent of the wildfire smoke drifting in from Washington and Oregon states and shrouding the Lower Mainland.

Normally, Murray, like most dike trail walkers, would be taking in the views that stretch across Richmond to Sea Island, onto downtown Vancouver and, lastly, to the North Shore Mountains.

In the space of three days, however, Vancouver and its mountains had “disappeared.”

Weather forecasters are predicting some of the grey gloom will lift by the middle of the week.

However, the remnants of a massive fire at the pier in New Westminster on Sunday is adding a plastic aftertaste to the smoke already visiting from south of the border.
