An elderly woman has become the first road-related fatality in Richmond in 2018.
Shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Richmond RCMP responded to the area of No. 1 and Tucker roads – just south of Westminster Highway - for a serious pedestrian collision.
According to police, the victim, an 81-year old female from Richmond, sustained critical injuries after she was struck by a late model Mercedes SUV.
Good Samaritans were reported to have provided medical assistance, including CPR, prior to the arrival of emergency crews.
The driver of the vehicle, a 78-year old male from Richmond, remained at scene and was cooperative with police.
The woman was taken to hospital by ambulance, but was later pronounced dead. Neither speed nor alcohol is considered a factor in the incident.
It’s not yet clear whether the collision took place on the marked crosswalk at the intersection.
The Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit is now investigating with assistance from the Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) and the BC Coroner’s Service.
“We remind all road users to be especially cautious and alert,” said Cpl. Dennis Hwang.
“For those travelling by foot or bicycle, please consider wearing clothing with reflective materials and use a flashing safety light.
“For motorists, plan your travels with time to spare, properly maintain the safety features of your vehicle, and always drive attentively.”
