Instructors and new firefighter recruits were spotted near Gilbert and River roads.

Richmond Fire-Rescue (RFR) firefighters were spotted training for water rescue operations on Friday afternoon.

At least a dozen of the firefighters and what appears to be a yellow inflatable boat were seen along the Fraser River near Gilbert and River roads.

Grant Wyenberg, acting deputy chief at RFR, told the Richmond News the group was together for a “technical water rescue training evolution” for instructors and new firefighter recruits.

“We train all of our suppression staff to perform surface water rescue as first responders or to provide assistance to the RCMP and the Canadian Coast Guard,” said Wyenberg.

He added that RFR has nearly 40 fully-trained technical water rescue staff on duty every day.
