Residents of Richmond’s Hamilton neighbourhood have been asking for an off-leash dog park for many years and are finally getting one.

Richmond City Council recently approved a $200,000 capital project to create an off-leash dog area in McLean Park.

City spokesperson City Adams said community feedback showed McLean Park being a “popular site for dog users,” during a public survey.

“While there is already an open, natural off-leash area at the Hamilton Highway Park on Thompson Road, some users have said the location is inconvenient for many residents,” said Adams.

The design process for the McLean Dog Park is expected to begin this fall with construction to start in spring 2024.

During the past year, the City of Richmond opened the new Alexandra Neighbourhood Dog Park and upgraded existing dog parks.

This included upgrades to Bark Park at No. 3 and Dyke roads and a permanent dog facility at Steveston Community Park.

“Dog parks are becoming increasingly popular and in demand in Richmond, leading the city to invest in establishing and upgrading these amenities throughout the city,” explained Adams.

“We also hope to complete the development of a new dog park in the London-Steveston Neighbourhood Park later this year.”
