Discounts for dog licence renewals in Richmond up to Feb. 28

There are five days left to get a discount when renewing your licence for your canine friends.

The deadline to renew dog licences – something that must be done every year - and get a discount in the City of Richmond is Feb. 28, after which fees to up.

Dog licences range from $13.50 for seniors 65 years or older – paid by Feb. 28 – to $318 for a non-spayed or non-neutered dangerous dog after the Feb. 28 deadline.

The cost to renew a dog licence for a spayed or neutered dog that’s not classified as a dangerous dog (without the seniors discount) is $26.25, but this goes up to $39 on March 1.

Seniors who don’t renew by Feb. 28 no longer get a discount and have to pay the $39 fee.

If a dog is not spayed or neutered, the annual fee is $64 before March 1 and $89.25 after this date.

Proof of spaying or neutering must be shown to the city. If owners have already provided this proof in previous years, they don't have to show it when renewing the licence.

Pit bull terriers, American pit bull terriers, pit bulls, Staffordshire bull terriers, American Staffordshire terrier or a dog with mixed breeding including any of these breeds are considered dangerous dogs.

Also, any dog owned for the purpose of dog fighting, or trained for dog fights, is considered a dangerous do.

In Richmond, a maximum of three dogs are allowed in one- and two-family homes and two dogs are allowed in multi-family complexes.
