More childcare spaces are coming to Richmond.

The YMCA of Greater Vancouver is receiving funding to create 77 spaces at the Spouts Child Care Centre in Capstan Village, the province announced Friday,

The child care centre, expected to open in spring 2021, will be located on the third floor of the Sprouts Early Childhood Development Hub, part of a larger housing development by Pinnacle Living Lands.

“We know critical learning takes place in the first six years of a child’s life – learning that requires a nurturing and caring environment, and we will certainly have that at Sprouts Child Care Centre,” said Kim Adamson, general manager of child care development with the YMCA of Greater Vancouver, in a statement.

Ownership of the facility will be transferred to the City of Richmond once construction is completed.

“The pandemic has highlighted the importance of child care, not just for children and families, but for our communities and the economy,” said Katrine Conroy, Minister of Children and Family Development, in a statement.

In addition to the Richmond spaces, the province announced new child care spaces for 34 other B.C. communities Friday, for a total of more than 3,600 new spaces.
