Musqueam block bridge

About 50 demonstrators from the Musqueam Nation caused traffic chaos around Richmond Thursday morning.

About 50 demonstrators from the Musqueam Nation caused traffic chaos around Richmond Thursday morning.

Traffic jams snaked for miles around the city after a Musqueam drum circle camped itself on the Vancouver side of the Arthur Laing Bridge in protest over a condo development on Marpole.

According to the First Nation, the development is taking place on an ancient village and burial ground.

The developer had a covenant with the Musqueam people not to develop over the ancient site, but it has been sold with plans for condos to another company.

Traffic was blocked from traveling southbound and restricted to one lane northbound.

Most motorists opted instead for the Oak and Knight street bridges, causing tailbacks for miles down Highway 99.

STEVESTON PARKING REMAINS FREE

Richmond city council approved this week the continuation of free parking on Steveston's streets.

Installing meters had been considered to deal with people abusing the two-hour parking rule. But fears were expressed that locals and visitors would simply take their business elsewhere.

Instead, staff decided to increase enforcement of time limits, introduce permit parking in village lanes and devise measures to curtail parking in residential areas.
