If you plan to boat or just lounge on the beach during this year’s Celebration of Lights fireworks displays and you do it in Richmond, you can expect to run into police and auxiliaries out to make sure everyone has a good time but stays safe.

Members of Richmond RCMP Airport Detachment, the Marine unit and Richmond RCMP Auxiliaries are patrolling Macdonald Beach and the waterways, starting July 26.

Police say there will be a “zero tolerance” approach to drinking in public during these patrols.

“The patrols will also take in boat safety checks so that those who are heading out onto the water stay safe and enjoy the show,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Stephanie Ashton.

“The increased patrols are in light of the expected large numbers of fireworks fans who gravitate to Richmond to avoid the traffic snarls of driving into the city.”
