The City of Richmond is continuing its quest to groom dog owners.

Beginning Dec. 1, unlicensed dogs can be registered online at the city’s website. While a new licence may also be obtained by submitting an application at Richmond city hall, parks planners believe the new online method will be a more convenient option, which should spur more registrations.

As of September 2015, there were a record 7,024 canines licensed in the city. The online option will be available next year for renewals.

The city claims licensing your dog can result in easier identification in the event that the animal is lost.

The city also notes the more dogs that are licensed, the better it can provide services for the pooch community. Recently, Richmond city council approved four permanent off-leash areas, bringing the total up to 11 and closer in line with neighbouring municipalities.

Furthermore, licensing revenue assists animal-related programs, including the Richmond Animal Protection Society (RAPS).

The city claims it will be conducting door-to-door canvassing in spring 2016 to ensure all dogs are licensed.

A licence costs $22 (seniors rate, $11) while the fine for being caught without a licence is $325. Only three dogs are allowed per home, and two per apartment or townhouse.
