'Modular centres' not ready at 3 schools

Delay in portable classrooms will mean students being shuffled around

At least five modular learning centres, popularly called portables, weren't ready for students as doors opened for the first day of school yesterday.

Currie, Debeck and Hamilton elementary schools will all have to shuffle to accommodate students for the next few weeks.

"We're working really hard. . . to have them all ready for occupancy by mid-September," assistant superintendent Nancy Brennan said of the centres.

The late arrival of the learning centres, which arrived between August 11 and 19, caused the current delay, Brennan explained.

The centres were shipped by a company which has been providing portables for schools all over the province, she added.

Brennan said having the learning centres ready in the next few weeks should be a fairly smooth process.

"The sites were prepped before the arrival," she said. "The furniture and equipment has arrived and is being stored."

Another five portables arrived and were successfully installed over the summer.
