'Miss Congeniality' rioter from Richmond set to plead guilty: Lawyer

A former pageant contestant from Richmond charged with participating in the Stanley Cup riot intends to plead guilty, says her lawyer.

A former pageant contestant from Richmond charged with participating in the Stanley Cup riot intends to plead guilty, says her lawyer.

Sophie Laboissonniere, 20, is alleged to be among the horde of rioters that looted London Drugs in downtown Vancouver following the Canucks' Game 7 loss in June 2011.

The Richmond resident is charged with breaking-and-entering and taking part in a riot.

Lawyer David Baker said he is in plea discussions with prosecutors.

"It was her intention from the outset, ever since she was identified, to enter a guilty plea," Baker said Thursday out-side B.C. Provincial Court.

Laboissonniere is "doing everything she can to atone" for what was a bad, impulsive decision, he said.

"She is taking responsibility for what she has done."

Laboissonniere is "holding up quite well" with regards to the case, but the media attention, fuelled partly by her pageant credentials, has had a "tremendous impact" on her, he said.

Laboissonniere was crowned Miss Congeniality at the Miss Coastal Vancouver pageant a few months before the riot occurred.

Baker noted Laboissonniere's case would likely be in the sentencing stage already had it not been delayed by the prosecution's application to televise the trial - something Baker said Laboissonniere is against.

"I think any person would prefer the matter be dealt with in the courts with-out cameras on them," he said.
