Meet Ralph: Richmond Animal Shelter's Pet of the Week

He has an infectious smile and is ready for long walks and outdoor adventures.

His smile will brighten up your day and he's ready for a lifetime of adventures with his "fur-ever" home.

Ralph, a seven-year-old Labrador retriever, is a big and handsome ball of energy who loves the active lifestyle.

He loves playing with balls, according to staff at the Richmond Animal Shelter run by BC SPCA, and has an adorable quirk when he's happy — "he always delights in having a toy cradled in his mouth."

Ralph has been at the shelter for 38 days and was dropped off after his previous owners were no longer able to meet his needs.

Shelter staff say he thrives in environments with ample space, especially a home with a yard and secure fence as Ralph enjoys the freedom to move around.

Some training to refine his manners would be helpful as Ralph's enthusiasm may lead to jumping, but he is "incredibly easy to motivate with treats," making training delightful and rewarding.

He was good with other dogs in his previous home but would do best in a house without small children considering his size and tendency to jump.

"The jury is still out on his compatibility with cats and other small animals, as this remains uncertain," staff added.

"With the right training and a spacious environment, Ralph is sure to bring joy and enthusiasm to his new family."

If you think your home would be a good fit for Ralph, here are some ways to find out:

1) Visit the shelter to meet Ralph during adoption viewings Friday to Tuesday noon to 3 p.m., learn more about their ideal match, and apply to adopt in person; or

2.) Submit an online application adopt.spca.bc.ca and staff will contact the first suitable adopter to set up a visit! Kindly note that due to the high number of applications and the availability of walk-in adoptions an online applicant would have to be available to come in for a meet within 24 hrs.
