The man found shot to death and slumped against a wall in a quiet residential neighbourhood on Wednesday afternoon has been identified and is known to police.

Police had raced to the scene after residents reported shots fired around 1:10 p.m. at Ferndale Road, just south of Westminster Highway between Garden City and No. 4 roads.

Some of the witnesses who heard the shots while working a block away said police cars were swarming the area in less than a few minutes and the entire area was quickly cordoned off.

The victim was gunned down in broad daylight and was found partially slumped against a wall at the intersection of Ferndale and Katsura, a family-orientated neighbourhood, in the shadow of several 14-storey high-rises and across from busy tennis courts.

Police said the man was suffering from several gunshots when they arrived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Residents, who were allowed access to get in and out of their nearby homes, could see the victims foot poking out from underneath the police tarp. What appeared to be a tennis bag could also be seen under the tarp.

Landscaper John Freitas, who was working in a townhouse complex about a block away, said he heard three bangs, but wasnt quite sure what they were.

I heard three sounds, pop, pop, pop. It was only when I heard the police I realized something was wrong, said Freitas.

There are unconfirmed reports the gunman fired the shots from a grey sedan, which he then fled in.
