Man arrested in alleged assault in Steveston over B.C. Day long weekend

At least six RCMP vehicles was on scene on Aug. 2.

A large presence of Richmond RCMP vehicles was spotted at Garry Point Park for an alleged assault on Saturday evening.

Police office responded around 7:20 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2 for reports of an alleged assault in progress in the park near Seventh Avenue.

A man and woman involved in the incident were known to each other, according to Cpl. Melissa Lui, media relations officer with the Richmond RCMP.

"Bystanders attempted to intervene and as a result, the man became more confrontational and aggressive," said Lui.

The man was arrested when Richmond RCMP arrived. He was later released "on conditions with a future court date."

Police said this was an isolated incident and there are no concerns to public safety.

There were no weapons or injuries reported during the incident.
