A crowd of around 800 came and paid their respects Saturday to longtime Steveston volunteer and former Richmond Fire Rescue chief Ted Lorenz who passed away Feb. 20.

An honour guard of firefighters, a piper and RCMP member in Red Serge were all  part of the ceremony inside the Steveston Community Centre's Net Shed.

On display were photographs of Lorenz, his fire chief's turn out coat and helmet.

Members of the fire department's honour guard performed a firefighters' tradition of rinigng a bell three times to show respect and honour of the service given by one of their own. The bell was one Lorenz donated upon his retirement in 1992 and has been used at the memorial services of fellow local firelfighters.

Lorenz, 81, had undergone double bypass surgery last Novemeber and died following complications.
