Dear Editor,

There is a total lack of communication and accountability regarding property edge city trees and their pruning schedule in our older city neighbourhoods.

The street I live on has got have some of the most overgrown trees in the city! In the last two years I have had to repair my gutters twice, received damage to my vehicle and have had to dodge frustrated neighbours because the trees in front of my home need heavy pruning.

On top of this, there are about a dozen trees on our side of the street that have the same issue. Here is my issue: When my neighbours or myself call or email for support about heavy trimming or service, we need either more funding, cooperation or accountability in solving these issues. Of the six interactions I’ve had with the city regarding my situation, only twice has somebody been dispatched to deal with a tree branch that was hanging precariously.

I certainly understand the issue that before more stringent bylaws were put into place, Richmondites were cutting down trees left and right. However, I think due to the city owning decision making on trees being pruned for such a long time it might be time to review the policy and put some resources in place.
