Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) has announced that their spring convocation has been cancelled.

The decision was made Thursday afternoon following an announcement that day by B.C. Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, who said that all large events with more than 250 people are to be cancelled to prevent further transmission of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

On Friday, Henry said she would be making those event cancellations mandatory, so event organizers can apply to insurance to cover costs.

Marlyn Graziano, vice-president of external affairs at KPU, said the school is “sorry to disappoint their students and families.”

“We always look forward to celebrating convocation; it is a special time at KPU. However, our highest priority is the safety and well-being of everyone on our campuses and we have been advised against holding large events at this time,” said Graziano.

Approximately 2,250 students have applied to attend KPU’s spring convocation this year with some applications still pending for evaluation.

Students will “graduate in absentia,” said Graziano, and will be receiving their credentials in the mail.

“We are looking at ways to celebrate with this group of graduates once we are able to host large gatherings again.”
