Christmas presents belong under the tree and not in the hands of thieves is the message the Richmond RCMP is telling residents as they shop for the holiday.
The police are reminding residents to not leave items in plain view in their vehicles to avoid auto theft during the winter gifting season.
According to Richmond RCMP statistics, a total of 215 auto thefts occurred in Richmond between Dec. 1 and 31 in 2019.
The statistics said 46 per cent of the cases occurred in the city center and north Richmond areas followed by 18 per cent in north-east and east Richmond, 18 per cent in south Richmond, nine per cent in west Richmond and six per cent on Sea Island.
Residents need to be wary of their surroundings and report any suspicious persons or activities.
Their tips include:
- Lock your car doors.
- Remove valuables from view and personal belongings from your car.
- Do not leave any personal identification, mail or credit cards in your car.
- Do not keep a loose garage door opener in your vehicle as thieves may try to find your residential address and break into your home.
