Keep right, unless passing, on highways 91 and 99 or face penalties and fines.

On Monday the provincial government announced new legislation to make it easier for police to ticket drivers on high-speed highways (80 km/h or above) who don't move over to allow cars to pass.

According to a news release from the Ministry of Transportation, the Motor Vehicle Amendment Act, 2015 clarifies that drivers are to travel in the right lane, unless they are:

  • overtaking and passing another vehicle
  • moving left to allow traffic to merge
  • preparing for a left hand turn
  • moving left to pass an official vehicle displaying a flashing light.

It is noted that when there is traffic congestion and actual travelling speeds drop to 50 km/h or less, drivers can use either lane.

The penalty for slow driving is $121 and three penalty points, according to the Insurance Corporation of B.C.
