The B.C. government and ICBC are kicking off this weekend with their CounterAttack campaign to encourage drivers to make smart and safe decisions during the holiday season.

Every year, an average of 17 lives is lost due to impaired driving in the Lower Mainland where 56 per cent of impaired-related crashes occur on the weekend from Friday to Sunday.

This December, police across the province will set up road checks to keep impaired drivers off the roads.

“CounterAttack remains a vital, strategic enforcement measure. Most people have got the message that driving after drinking or consuming drugs is dangers,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General.

“However, there are still those willing to take a chance with the lives of themselves, their passengers and road users. CounterAttack makes intercepting those people job number one.”

For those who plan to drink and need a ride home during the holidays, Operation Red Nose may be for you.

The volunteer service provides safe rides to drivers, who are either impaired or unfit to drive, in 20 B.C. communities and is available from Nov. 29 to Dec. 21 on Friday and Saturday nights including New Year’s Eve.
