A section of Highway 99 was shut down for several hours on Tuesday night after a suspected drug dealer fled from the police’s gang enforcement team.

The highway was closed between King George Boulevard in South Surrey and Highway 91 in Delta from around 9:30 p.m. until 2 a.m. Wednesday.

About 15 minutes prior to the closure, officers from the Surrey Gang Enforcement Team (SGET) attempted to stop a Mercedes CLS550 at King George Boulevard and Highway 10.

However, the vehicle fled from police and was subsequently found on Highway 99, south of the Serpentine River overpass.

The driver abandoned the vehicle and ran from police into the nearby wooded area.

SGET, along with other police, a dog team and an Emergency Response Team conducted an extensive search for the driver, but he couldn’t be found.

He has, however, been identified as a 44-year-old man from Langley and police added that there was evidence of drug-trafficking, and a warrant is being sought for the driver’s arrest.

Police say this was an isolated incident and there is no risk to public safety.
