Richmond Fire-Rescue is hosting a series of open houses during Fire Prevention Week from Oct. 9 to 13.
Fire fighters and mascot Blaze will be present for a guided tour and information on how to prevent home fires.
During the week, the team will make fire escape plans the priority. Families are encouraged to draw up a plan of their house and indicate an outside meeting place, as well as, two ways out of each room.
If the plan is practiced at least twice a year, fires will be easier to prevent, says Richmond Fire-Rescue. In addition, smoke alarms should be tested annually to make sure they're properly installed and functioning.
And on Oct. 9, those who've been practicing can win a free pizza. The staff partners with the delivery team of Domino's Pizza to reward those who can prove their alarms are working.
Also, people who have drawn up a fire escape plan will be provided with discounts.
To raise extra awareness of the dangers of fires and the methods of protection, Domino's Pizza has printed safety messages on their pizza boxes.
For those who can't make it to their local fire stations, Canadian Tire and Home Depot shops will have the same information available during the week.
